British Drilling Association Welcomes Mark Toye as New Chair

The British Drilling Association (BDA) is pleased to announce the appointment of David Bradley as its new Chair, with effect from May 2026, marking the start of a new chapter focused on competence, practical guidance and clear industry leadership across the UK drilling sector.

With a background in civil engineering from the University of Strathclyde and a career spanning piling, grouting, tunnelling, ground investigation and instrumentation, David brings a broad range of technical, operational and strategic experience to the role. Having worked across both site-based delivery and the coordination of nationally dispersed teams, he takes up the position with a strong understanding of the day-to-day realities and wider challenges facing the sector.

David’s appointment comes at a time when the drilling industry is facing increasing scrutiny from clients, regulators and the wider construction supply chain. His focus as Chair will be on ensuring the BDA continues to provide practical, relevant support to members while clearly demonstrating the value of competence, consistency and professionalism in drilling operations.

Speaking on his appointment, David Bradley said: “I’m pleased to be taking on the role of BDA Chair at such an important time for the sector. We have strong technical knowledge and a great deal of practical expertise across the industry, but there is more we can do to make expectations clearer, strengthen competence and provide guidance that members can apply with confidence on projects.

“The BDA already has an important role in helping to raise standards and support the industry, and I want to build on that by keeping the focus on practical measures that improve quality, reduce risk and help members respond to the changing demands of clients and regulators.”

A key priority during David’s tenure will be to reinforce the value and relevance of the BDA Audit, particularly its role in supporting quality ground investigation and aligning with recognised standards such as BS 22475 and the UK GI Specification. He is keen to ensure that clients, consultants and insurers better understand what the Audit measures in practice and why that matters in terms of reliability, safety and risk control.

Alongside this, David is committed to supporting workforce development through clearer entry points, more accessible progression routes and practical training in areas where risks remain highest.
